Shoulder pain?
Do you have shoulder pain? Is it an overuse injury? Overuse injuries are any type of muscular or joint injury caused by repetitive stress that surpasses the body’s natural repair processes.
Most Shoulder overuse injuries include the following symptoms:
-
Pain during activity and at rest
-
Pain observed at the top or front of the shoulder during overhead activity
-
Tenderness on the outside of the shoulder
-
Loss of strength and range of motion (ROM)
-
Pain during throwing motions
Did you know shoulder impingement is the most prevalent diagnosis accounting for 40-65% of reported shoulder pain?
Don’t worry, you can test for it at home by following these easy steps:
-
Stand up straight, holding your hands straight out in front of you
-
Place your right hand on your left shoulder
-
While keeping your palm down flat on your shoulder, raise your elbow up as high as you can. Do you feel any pain? Quick, sharp pain? (not stiffness or tightness)
-
Repeat on opposite side
This test is called the Impingement Clearing Test. If you feel pain during this test, you have achieved a positive result. Any positive results need to be checked out before any upper body exercises should be initiated.
